Peracetic Acid (PAA) is an extremely strong oxidizer, widely used in the food and beverage industry for the disinfection of pipes, cooling water systems, processing equipment and for the spray washing of food products.
Peracetic Acid is one of the substances used in the early phases of water treatment to destroy bacteria. This chemical does not affect effluent toxicity, therefore doesn’t need to be removed like chlorine. Neither does its use result in toxic residuals, mutagenic, or carcinogenic compounds after disinfection.
Peracetic Acid is considered environmentally friendly due to its decomposition products, however, it also is highly corrosive and it can severely irritate eyes, skin, and the respiratory system, therefore monitoring is critical. As with any disinfection system, maintaining proper residual values is the key to effective pathogen control.
