Make-up Water

Make-up water applications are critical to the function of hydronic systems. During this process, fresh or potable water is added to the system to offset water that is lost by blowdown, evaporation, steam, draw-off or another withdrawal process. Our solutions help provide accurate flow measurements, so facilities managers can calculate rates to determine water consumption.

Make-up Water

How the Process Works

During the make-up water process, fresh or potable water is added to the system to offset water that is lost by blowdown, evaporation, steam, draw-off or another withdrawal process. It’s critical that the water within these applications—and the water that’s added—meet the system parameters to prevent corrosion, scaling, air entrapment and fouling.

Benefits of Flow Meters

Flow meters provide accurate flow measurements, so facilities managers can calculate rates for leakage or evaporation and determine how much make-up water needs to be added. This measurement helps determine the volume of water consumption and detect leaks within automatic cold water make-up assemblies in hydronic systems.

Selecting a Flow Meter

Controls contractors, facilities managers and other key stakeholders often look for meters that provide volumetric measurement with accuracies of 2% or better that can also capture low flow measurements. Without proper measurement to add the correct amount of make-up water, facilities managers won’t know how much water or glycol their system needs, which can lead to critical malfunctions or even system failure.

Relevant Metering Technologies

Ultrasonic Technology
Ultrasonic Technology

Ultrasonic flow meters are a leading selection for make-up water applications because of their low cost of ownership, non-invasive design and reduced installation costs. Our Dynasonics® TFX-500w Ultrasonic flow meter is quick and easy to install without cutting into the pipe, and captures bi-directional flow, as well as low flow. This technology also samples the flow 50 times per second for accurate and stable measurement of makeup water lines.

Electromagnetic Technology
Electromagnetic Technology

Electromagnetic meters are another viable solution in make-up water applications. Our ModMAG® M2000 Electromagnetic flow meter features a standard rubber liner making it suitable for water temperatures up to 140° F. It’s user-friendly, built for field verification testing and provides accuracies of + 0.2%.

Impeller Technology
Impeller Technology

Impeller technology is known for its low-cost accuracy, impressive repeatability and simple maintenance. Our Impeller SDI Series flow sensor is a cost-effective, easy-to-install solution that provides quick response to changes in flow rate within closed pipe systems. Additionally, our Impeller SDI Series 250 flow sensor is a viable option with its six-blade impeller design, curved shape and absence of magnetic drag, which provides improved repeatability even at lower flow rates.

Nutating Disc Technology
Disc Technology

In applications where individuals can only use 4-20 milliamp (mA) and pulse outputs, our Recordall® Disc Series flow meter is a suitable solution. It features nutating disc technology, which ensures high accuracy and repeatability over the entire flow meter range. This meter is also rugged and reliable and requires minimal maintenance which makes it a popular selection in make-up water applications.
