Badger Meter Cookie Policy

Last Updated / Effective Date: October 10, 2023

1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy describes Badger Meter’s use of cookies, web beacons, and other tracking technologies on its websites (“Websites”). It is part of Badger Meter’s Global Privacy Statement (“Privacy Statement”) found here. Capitalized terms not defined in this Cookie Policy have the meanings set forth in the Privacy Statement.

We may change this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use and how we use them. A banner on our Websites will remind you to review our Cookie Policy.

2. What is a cookie?

A “cookie” is a small text file that our Websites save onto your computer or device when you use the Websites that enables the Websites to remember your actions and preferences and recognize you or your browser.

We also use other technologies similar to cookies that store information on a user’s device, such as pixel tags. A pixel tag is a small graphic image placed on the web page designed to allow us to monitor and obtain information about the traffic on your Websites, such as the IP address of the computer that downloaded the page on which the tag appears, the URL of the page, the time the page was viewed, the type of browser used to view the page, and the information in cookies set by vendors we use to assist us with advertising to you. We also use pixel tags to recognize a unique cookie on your web browser, which enables us to learn which advertisements brought you to our Websites.

We refer to all of these technologies as “cookies” in this policy.

3. First-Party and Third-Party Cookies.

Cookies may either be “first-party” or “third-party.” First-party cookies are set by Badger Meter on its own Websites. Third-party cookies are set by a third-party or service provider on Badger Meter's Websites. We are not responsible for third-party cookies. A first-party Cookie allows your web browser to talk to the actual website that you are visiting. A third-party Cookie allows your web browser to talk to a third-party provider providing services or features on the website you are visiting.

4. What is Collected and Why?

We use cookies and other tracking technologies to learn whether the Websites are operating optimally, to learn whether you are a repeat visitor, for personalized advertising, and to provide us with valuable data and statistics about the usage and effectiveness of our Websites. We may combine information gathered from cookies with other Personal Information.

Generally, the type of information we collect through cookies is specific to your computer or other device and includes the IP address, date and time the device accessed our Websites, what parts of our Websites were visited, your internet services provider, the device ID number, approximate geographic location, browser type, the websites you visit before and after coming to our Websites, and whether the web pages requested were delivered successfully.

5. How Long do Cookies Last?

The Websites use session cookies and persistent cookies:

  • Session Cookies exist only for so long as you are visiting the applicable website and are typically deleted when you exit your web browser.
  • Persistent Cookies either do not have a set expiration date or exist for a set period of time such as several months or years. Each time you visit a website that has implemented a persistent cookie, the persistent cookie is renewed and that cookie will remain active until its predetermined expiration date or until you manually delete such cookie. You can manually delete persistent cookies through your browser settings.

6. What Types of Cookies do we use on our Websites?

We use the following categories of cookies on our Websites. Please note, we provide more information about certain categories in the sections below.

  • Strictly Necessary – These cookies enable the Websites to function properly and cannot be switched off.
  • Performance – These cookies are used to collect information about how you use our Websites. For example, we collect information about which of our pages are most frequently visited, and by which types of users. We often use third-party vendors to provide this information. In that case, the vendor collects information about website usage and uses it to provide us with reports and insights that we can use to better understand and measure how users interact with our Websites, predict patterns and future behavior based on users' past use of the Websites and other websites, and improve our advertising.
  • Targeting – These cookies are used to collect information about your visit to our Websites, including the content you have viewed, the links you have followed and information about your browser, device and your IP address. These cookies may be set by our advertising partners. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant advertisements on other sites.
  • Social Media – These cookies are set by social media service providers that we have added to the Websites to enable you to share our content with your friends and networks. These cookies can track your browser across other sites and build a profile based on your interests.

7. Performance Cookies

We use Google Analytics and other analytics software from third-party service providers on our Websites to collect information about the usage of our Websites. These vendors use this information to provide us with reports and insights that we can use to better understand and measure how users interact with our Websites, predict patterns and future behavior based on users' past use of the Websites and other websites, and improve our advertising.

For example, we use Google Analytics, in conjunction with Google Tag Manager, to better understand how our Websites are used. Google will place cookies on your computer or mobile device that will generate information that we select about your use of the Websites, including your computers or mobile device’s IP address. Google then provides us with reports and insights that we can use to better understand and measure how users interact with our Websites, predict patterns and future behavior based on users' past use of the Websites and other websites, and improve our advertising. You can opt out and find further information about Google by visiting: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

8. Targeting Cookies

With your consent, we may also share and receive online data collected through cookies with our advertising. This means that when you are on another website, you may be shown advertising based on your browsing patterns on our Websites. The advertising techniques we use do not collect personal data such as your name, email address, postal address or phone number. We use third-party advertising cookies including:

  • Google Ads. We have enabled and implemented Google Dynamic Remarketing, a Google advertising tool. To opt out of remarketing advertising provided through Google, to customize your ad preferences, or to limit Google’s collection or use of this information, visit Google’s Safety Center and Google’s Ad Settings and follow Google’s personalized ad opt-out instructions. Opting out will not affect your use of the Websites.
  • Microsoft Ads. We may use Microsoft Ads (formerly known as Bing Ads), an online marketing service provided by Microsoft to display search advertisements and to track when you have visited our Websites via a Microsoft Ads advertisement. If you click on a Microsoft Ads advertisement, Microsoft Ads stores a cookie on your device that is used to track the number of individuals who click on a Microsoft Ads advertisement and are forwarded to the applicable website. To learn more about Microsoft's privacy practices, please refer to their privacy policy, available here. Microsoft allows you to opt out of tracking associated with Microsoft Ads. You may opt-out here.
  • LinkedIn Insight Tag. We may use Linked Insight Tag, a cookie placed by LinkedIn that enables us to measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns served on LinkedIn. The information collected by that cookie will be transmitted directly to and stored by LinkedIn. For more information about LinkedIn’s privacy practices, please refer to https://www.linkedin.com/legal/privacy-policy. To opt-out, you can update your advertising preferences through your LinkedIn account. If you do not have a LinkedIn account, LinkedIn allows you to opt-out of applicable targeted advertising by visiting https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/guest-controls.
  • Facebook Connect. We use Facebook Connect by Meta to track and analyze users and advertise to our users through Facebook and Facebook-affiliated sites and to deliver targeted advertisements. For more information about Facebook's privacy practices, please refer to their privacy policy, available at HTTPS://WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/ABOUT/PRIVACY. To opt out, please visit HTTPS://WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/ADS/PREFERENCES.

9. Social Media and Social Media Cookies

We are active on social media, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn (“Social Media”).

The Websites allow you to connect and share data with Social Media. These features may require us to use cookies, plug-ins, and APIs provided by such Social Media companies to facilitate those communications and features. The Websites may also use advertising networks and services offered by Social Media companies to deliver advertising content. Use of these services requires the applicable Social Media company to implement cookies or pixel tags to deliver ads to you while you access the Websites.

Anything you post on Social Media is public information and will not be treated confidentially. We may post (or re-post) on the Websites and our Social Media pages any comments or content that you post on our Social Media pages.

Your use of Social Media is governed by the privacy policies and terms of the third parties that own and operate those websites and not by this Privacy Statement. We encourage you to review those policies and terms before using any Social Media features provided through our Websites or third-party websites.

10. Disabling Cookies.

Most browsers automatically accept cookies. You can disable this function, but disabling cookies may impact your use and enjoyment of the Websites. Not all features or functions of the Websites may work properly if you disable cookies. You cannot disable all cookies, such as cookies that are essential to the functioning of the Websites.

11. How can you control Advertising cookies?

If you are a California resident, please visit our “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” page.

To change your preferences with respect to certain online ads and to obtain more information about third-party ad networks and online behavioral advertising, visit National Advertising Initiative Consumer opt-out page or the Digital Advertising Alliance Self-Regulatory Program. Changing your settings with individual browsers or ad networks will not necessarily carry over to other browsers or ad networks. As a result, depending on the opt-outs you request, you may still see our ads.

Alternatively, most web browsers allow some control of most cookies through the browser settings. To find out more about cookies, including how to see what cookies have been set, visit www.aboutcookies.org or www.allaboutcookies.org.
