Condenser water systems work in tandem with chilled water systems to remove heat energy from a building or process. Because condenser water systems often include a water-side economizer—or a variable-flow-primary chilled and heating water system—measuring these fluctuating flow rates is important to ensure proper operation of the HVAC equipment.
First, chilled water systems absorb heat energy from within the building or process to maintain a consistent temperature. The heated water is then passed to the condenser water system, which removes the heat and rejects it into the atmosphere through the cooling tower.
Condenser water systems can be challenging applications without the right equipment to accurately measure flow rate and temperature. If facilities managers cannot monitor system function or efficiency, they risk critical malfunction or complete system failure. Facilities managers invest in highly accurate flow meters to ensure their condenser water system is operating at peak performance.
With our flow measurement solutions, facilities managers can incorporate flow and BTU energy (tonnage) to measure the exact amount of energy released within the cooling tower operation. This helps ensure the cooling towers are maintaining their efficiency and the equipment is not overworked. Below are a few of the most common technology types used in condenser water applications.
Ultrasonic clamp-on meters are a leading selection in condenser water applications because operations can continue running during installation. Ultrasonic flow meters—like our Dynasonics® TFX-5000 Ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter—can sample the flow 40 times per second to provide accurate flow, temperature and energy measurements when paired with accompanying sensors to maintain optimal system function.
In condenser water system applications, electromagnetic flow meters provide exceptional accuracy with only three pipe diameters of straight run required. Our ModMAG® M2000 Electromagnetic flow meter is a popular selection because of its advanced, user-friendly design. It features a standard rubber liner to handle water up to 170° F and provides consistently accurate reading measurements of + 0.2%. This meter is full bore, has no moving parts or pressure drops across the meter and has one of the widest measurement ranges in the industry of 400:1.
Taking your flow measurement to the next step is simple when you pair your flow meter with our FC-5000 BTU Flow Computer. It’s designed to provide granular data within control operations. Simply pair the FC-5000 with a flow meter input and two temperatures (supply and return) to receive BTU usage calculations, showing how resources are being used within your application.
Our Dynasonics® TFX-5000 Ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter is also a perfect solution for energy measurement that eliminates the BTU flow computer, so the customer can have a completely integral BTU energy solution from one device.
