How It Works: E-Series® Ultrasonic Water Meters

A leading choice for water utilities, E-Series® Ultrasonic water meters are designed for high measurement accuracy and long-term reliability in potable, reclaimed, residential, commercial industrial and fire service applications.
E-Series® Ultrasonic water meters from Badger Meter are a leading choice for water utilities. The meters are designed for high measurement accuracy and long-term reliability in potable, reclaimed, residential, commercial industrial and fire service applications.

Both E-Series Ultrasonic meters and E-Series Ultrasonic Plus meters use solid-state technology to improve dependability and provide greater extended flow capabilities. And with no moving parts, E-Series Ultrasonic meters have minimal maintenance compared to mechanical meters.

How Inline Ultrasonic Technology Works

Our E-Series Ultrasonic meters use high-frequency sound waves to measure flow. More specifically, the meters measure the velocity of acoustically conductive water as it flows through the meters. When water enters the measuring tube, ultrasonic signals are sent consecutively, with and against the flow of water. Velocity is then determined by measuring the time difference between the measurement in the forward and reverse directions. Total volume is calculated from the measured flow velocity using temperature and pipe diameter. This precision results in impressively accurate reads and an extended flow range, which allow utilities to measure small volumes of water and improve overall reliability.

Key Benefits of E-Series Ultrasonic Water Meters

Our E-Series Ultrasonic water meter line is suitable for residential and commercial applications.

E-Series Ultrasonic Plus Meters

As part of a smart water solution paired with BEACON® SaaS and ORION® Cellular endpoints, the E-Series Ultrasonic Plus meter enables utilities to temporarily restrict water service remotely—without sending a technician in the field.

A gate valve is integrated into the lay length of the E-Series Ultrasonic Plus meter, which can operate in three positions: open, partial and restricted. At any time, utilities can gain visibility of valve status within BEACON.

This meter is ideal for applications where controlling the flow is required, such as:

  • Water conservation: Regulate water usage in areas with watering restrictions or in the case of severe weather that damages pipelines; restricted or low flow to impacted areas.
  • Multitenant buildings: Manage tenant changes by actuating valves during move-ins and move-outs.
  • Seasonal homes: Restrict flow at seasonal homes, which mitigates the potential for leaks when homes are unoccupied.
  • Non-payment customers: Encourage customers to make payment—with the assurance that the meter’s restricted position provides life-supporting flow.

E-Series Ultrasonic Meters for Residential Applications

E-Series G2® Ultrasonic inline meters for residential applications offer increased performance to improve reliability and maximize revenue.

Features

  • Simple operation: A nine-digit LCD display reports advanced data points: consumption, rate of flow, unit of measure, pressure*, temperature, alarm conditions (reverse-flow, no usage, empty pipe, exceeding max flow, suspected leak, pressure*, temperature, end of life and measurement error) and firmware version.
  • Sustained accuracy: Maintains long-term sustained accuracy within +1.5% and extended low flow accuracy within +3%. With high measurement accuracy, these meters can capture additional revenue over the course of their 20-year battery life.
  • Pressure and temperature data: Pressure* and temperature data and alarms are shown at the meter and through ORION Cellular endpoints and BEACON.

*Available with optional integrated pressure sensor

E-Series Ultrasonic Meters for Commercial Applications

With E-Series G2® Ultrasonic inline meters for commercial applications, utilities can manage their smart water meter reading systems more efficiently.

Features

  • Pressure and Alarm Data: Pressure and temperature data and alarms are not only displayed at the meter but also reported through BEACON and ORION Cellular endpoints.
  • Enhanced Meter Display: Easy-to-read, nine-digit LCD display presents consumption, rate of flow, unit of measure, pressure, temperature, alarm conditions and firmware version.
  • Wider Flow Range: Greater turn-down ratio for extended flow ranges, which leads to increased revenue.
